The purpose of this position is to assist the animal shelter operations and services. This is accomplished by performing duties on a daily basis to maintain office areas, animal kennel areas, provides general care, feeding, exercising and grooming of animals, and assisting the public with adoptions and redemptions. Other animal care related tasks include assisting Animal Services Officers with vaccinations, microchipping and euthanasia, monitoring and observing animals to detect signs of illness or injury, and providing customer service to the general public. The majority of the work (85%) is conducted indoors with extensive physical labor and exposure to heat/cold weather conditions. Responsibilities Performs departmental specific functions by attending animals in the animal shelter; cleaning and disinfecting kennels and cages, litter boxes, feeding utensils, pans and equipment, etc.; launder animal bedding and towels, sweeping and mopping floors, removing trash and cleaning dog yards of waste. Provides general care and feeding of animals by feeding, watering, exercising and bathing. Assists Animal Services Officers with vaccinations, microchipping, administering medication, drawing blood for health checks and assist and/or perform euthanasia. Maintains stock and storage rooms in neat and organized manner. Stocks inventory of food, litter, cleaning supplies, etc. Periodic transport of animals to the veterinarian clinic(s) for visits as needed. Assists with public with adoptions and redemptions by performing adoption procedures, assisting in reclaiming lost animals, directing the public to areas of the shelter, helping customers complete paperwork, recording animal information and maintaining records. Follow-up on adoptions and redemptions by checking the computer system and adoption contracts for proof of vaccination and sterilization and sending notification letters is contracts are not met. Provides assistance to the general public by answering inquiries over the phone or in person, directing telephone calls, preparing and maintaining records, receiving paperwork and entering information into computer system. Qualifications Work requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. Six months up to and including two years in animal care and handling Valid Texas Class C Driver's License. Must obtain Texas Department of Health Certified Euthanasia Technician certification within 120 days of employment Rabies Pre-Exposure Vaccination: All staff are required to have rabies pre-exposure vaccinations.
